Tony Griffin
As a figurative artist, I’m interested in both the human body and spirit contained within. My research takes me below the surface on both counts, in search of embedded truths. Looking at both our physical anatomy, and psychological mind sets. my anatomical curiosity centres around biomechanics, imbuing movement into my figures is an important aspect of my work, as is conveying emotion.
My working class background informs my artistic outlook, and personal experiences become themes for deeper exploration within my practice. With an awareness of the digitised world we have recently started to inhabit, I’m interested in the idea of perceived reality, how it’s created and question what’s being lost or gained as we become absorbed into this developing digital terrain.
Drawing plays a major role in my practice. Balancing classical knowledge and principles, with an intuitive approach to mark making. I enjoy playing with rhythm and form within my work, to convey life and bring energy to my subject. Im also interested in design. Geometry, pattern and shape are considered, bringing graphic elements to my work.
My work often remains as drawings. Other times these are developed within other mediums. Painting, animation, sculpture and film are all used to produce a desired effect or tell the intended story. I employ both organic and digital processes, often mixing them together. I’m interested in existing and emerging technologies, in terms of creating work in the studio, and also their potential in output and display.
